I’m up to Day 6 of Dan Norris’ “7 Day Startup” book and my new startup ClicksAndLeads.com is coming along nicely. It’s all about goal setting today. I’m ambivalent about goal-setting at the best of times, avoided it for years so that I didn’t disappoint myself (how mad is that?), then got into personal development and got myself a coach who was having none of it, so started goal-setting from that moment onwards. Guess what? My life improved!
Dan set himself a monthly recurring revenue goal (MRR) that was equivalent to the income he made per month from the previous startup he’d founded initially. He blasted through that one in the first month (week?) and that’s how he knew he was onto a winner – he was getting traction.
I’m going to set myself a goal of 20 clients at the middle package, which includes a Likes Campaign, a Leads Campaign and a Re-Marketing Campaign, with 3 image ads in each (or the same image ad but 3 interest groups).
That will set up a nice steady recurring revenue to grow from, a manageable amount of initial customers, covering all costs, and paying me something too. I’m already wanting a different theme I’ve since seen, but as you’ll see below, I’ve got much more urgent fish to fry!
I had to get the old calculator out for this one, because the minimum ad spend/ 20% fee sums didn’t quite add up at first, but I got there in the end. It’s also very difficult to line up the items in each package in the Pricing Table, but I’m living with that for now.
I had set up my ads in Facebook, let all my Mastermind members know, and dropped some info in the Facebook groups I belong to as well, where allowed.
Setting Goals Changed Everything
When I started thinking about setting goals, I realised that how I had things set up was creating friction still. Making it harder to achieve any goals, in fact.
The startup mindset is very different to the consultancy/ mentoring/ coaching mindset, and my mind was still in the past (last week).
I was too busy qualifying people who might apply for a consultation, and thus putting them off. I previously had put in a $100 deposit to book a demo, which was 100% refundable either against your first campaign or just given back if you didn’t go ahead.
But by adding that in, I was presumably going to put some people off from booking the demo/ consult because they might not know me and know that I’d stand by my refund promise.
Then a REALLY radical idea occurred to me which obviated the need for a deposit completely. What if I offered to prove the concept to people by offering them a 7 day Free Trial? Get their likes, traffic and/or leads flowing to prove it works before I ask for ANY payment!
The demo would turn into a Setup session and that, in itself, would qualify serious customers.
I felt very excited when I thought up that one!
I immediately set that up and changed my marketing funnel and emails in Infusionsoft, then I had to break off for a couple of hours to…
- mail my list a link to the “Your Best Year Yet” webinar recording which got such great feedback I wanted more people to watch it
- edit Episode 7 of the “Own It! Your Business & Your Life” podcast as we have just hit the New & Noteworthy on iTunes and want to keep the momentum up there too).
Here’s the Launch Jeopardy Section!
So you always hear about how in launch stories something invariably goes wrong, everyone has to scramble and work late to fix it (if not all night!), and then it’s all ok at the 11th hour, right?
Well, I’m here to tell you it’s true…
I’m happily in the middle of podcast editing and several things happen almost at once!
- Two online friends independently contact me on Facebook and say the new site is down
- Another person, who has just signed up as an affiliate Skypes me to say the same
- I can’t replicate the problem, presumably because of caching, all looks fine my end
- Rich Schefren’s copywriter, Chuck, contacts me to say the blog post & mail-out featuring me is going live tomorrow morning
- My niece and her friend who are staying overnight turn up and want looking after and talking to!
So guess what? I had to “scramble and work late”.
GoDaddy were telling me it’s because of abnormally high traffic numbers which I find hard to believe as all I’ve done is tweet and share the site a bit on Social Media.
Moreover, Google Analytics Real Time say there’s only one person on the site. The GoDaddy guy says that that is because the site is down (and it’s probably me!)
Duh! There is some logic there… I wasn’t sure but I couldn’t taken any chances with Rich’s email going out tomorrow… I have no idea how big his mailing list is but it’s SUPERSTAR MARKETER LARGE!
I ask GoDaddy if I can upgrade the shared hosting the site is on (I always start new sites off there, makes life easier usually) and am told, no, I’m at my limit. No more traffic for me if I stay there!
Immediately I contact the highly recommended WPEngine and ask the nice “chat” man if I can swap to their hosting and if the site will be live by tomorrow if I do?
“Yes” is obviously the answer.
(Here’s a link to get 2 months free if you sign up for a year of hosting with WPEngine, by the way!)
All went well, really easy, with exporting the old site from WordPress, setting up the new account, importing the new site, setting up the LeadPages plugins and importing the LeadPages front page.
But then it came to the redirection of the domain and the instructions were completely UNINTELLIGIBLE – to my weird brain anyway.
So competent and quick at some things, so useless at others.
Sarah’s help was enlisted – she was just off to the beach in New Zealand – and we settled back to wait for the propagation to take effect. It could take 72 hours but usually it will be much quicker…
I had to go to bed at that point and play the Sims and listen to the James & Ezra TAG podcast till I calmed down.
What would happen in the morning I wondered?
7 Day Startup is a series of posts about my own journey following the steps laid out in Dan’s book over the Festive season, 2014. Almost a year on, and my startup,ClicksandLeads.com, is going great guns, so I highly recommend you trying it for yourself!
