Business Words Of The Week

In each Own It!! podcast, Nicola and Judith discuss their chosen Business Word Of The Week for that particular week.

Here are their words for Episode 007 of the Own It!! podcast:

Judith:

Tell me about your word of the week?

Nicola:

Appreciation. My word of the week is appreciation. It came about because I suddenly realised, it was yesterday actually, and it was the day before Christmas Eve and I suddenly realized that I hadn’t… because I’m not doing Christmas cards, I don’t to them. I’ve only had one Christmas card, I’ve had lots of messages online, and that’s been fine. I suddenly realised that I needed to be more consciously in touch with people like clients. We can’t assume they all read our blogs, that’s the thing. We can’t assume they all read the messages in the groups and Facebook.

I reached out to every, single person who’d been on the podcast yesterday and over the last year. I did it in a way that I hope made it feel very personal but it was to 100 people so I couldn’t do it one-by-one. I had lots and lots of nice messages back, which is nice. Also I reached out to each of my clients to assure them that I’d be looking at their Facebook ads, if not daily, then every other day, just to make sure that everything was rolling on. Just to say, “Thank you very much for taking the leap of faith” when I announced that I was setting up that service. Just really just appreciating everything and particularly people. I’m just making a real effort to tell the people I care about, how much I appreciate them, whether that’s in work or personal life.

Judith:

I really like the things that you’ve been describing over the last few weeks that are bringing you away from list communications to more human ones actually. I think it’s reminding me about that the backlash that everybody’s having to how we feel processed by bulk communications. I think that’s a really good direction to be taking actually. You demonstrated with one of your client stories that it works.

Nicola:

Yes and the point is it makes me feel happier. It makes me feel more connected. It’s actually a selfish thing, but it makes other people feel nice too, so it’s a two-way street, isn’t it, which is always is a benefit? You do it naturally don’t you? You constantly talk about how much you appreciate your clients on your blog.

Judith:

I think this explains slightly my digital thing as well, which is that I am working now probably with 50 clients or something like that. That is my work that dominates my week. I like it like that, and it’s a nice, virtuous circle of I love them and I’ve asked them for some year-end feedback and testimonials as I said. What you put out comes back to you multiplied Nicola. I love that. I’ve always loved the clients, as you know.

Nicola:

It’s good. So what’s your word of the week Judith?

Judith:

Well, characteristically it’s magic.

Nicola:

Go on then.

Judith:

Well Christmas is a magical time of year, especially if you’ve got little people who believe in Santa. Lots of sort of Christmasy films are about magic and miracles. I definitely know that there’re rules around this. It’s part of my strap line that one of the deliverables is some money making magic. How I see it working in clients is – it’s amazing actually. It works rather better for them than it does for me, which is the life of a coach for you. I do think the thing to do is to expect miracles, and I see so much magic and miraculous stuff going on week-by-week. It’s done by human beings. don’t get me wrong, but we do have the potential to be more than the sum of our parts.

My favourite expression from a client often is, ‘You’ll never guess what’s happened?” That’s when they’re going to tell something magical or miraculous that they weren’t expecting that just turned up. They always say, “Well it just turned up.” One of their other expressions is, “Out of the blue.” It’s never out of the blue. That’s a bit like Ed Sheeran’s point earlier, it’s as a result of some effort that they’ve put in, and because it comes from left field it always feels slightly magical and miraculous. I think what Christmas reminds me is, let’s look for more of it. Expect more of it.

Nicola:

I’m with you on this because even though I have taken a rather large shift towards not believing in anything outside of ourselves, I do actually believe in the power of magic within science. I was thinking, it’s funny actually, because just before we came on the call today I was remembering, I can’t remember what prompted the thought really, I think I was thinking about my friend Kim and one of the biggest things that happened to us, we went to see Hughie Green’s fortune teller. Funnily enough, she lived underneath our flat, we lived in one road and we didn’t know this at all, but we were recommended back in the days when we did these sorts of things, we were recommended to her. We went round to see her and we realised that she was in a road that was lower down than our road, and it was the parallel road to ours, so her little studio thing where she read people’s fortunes was pretty much underneath our flat, which was a really, really bizarre coincidence.

Anyway, one of the things she told my friend Kim was, that she had already met her husband, that she saw him every week but that he didn’t yet know that she existed and vice versa. Kim subsequently went on to marry a very talented graphic designer who happened to be the bouncer at our favourite nightclub, who ushered us into the nightclub every week, but we had never met him and he had never met us, although he’d stamped our hands and let us pass. She predicted the two main loves of my life in a way that was extremely distinctive, I won’t share it on here. I was thinking about that and I was thinking she definitely was…

Hughie Green used to travel down from London, at least monthly, to see her because he rated her talents so highly. She did really say a lot of things. I know it was probably, what’s that word where suggestive questioning? Threw stuff out at us without us even realising it. I was thinking, I think it was because I went to see The Hobbit yesterday and there’s quite a lot of magic in The Hobbit, so I was thinking about her. Then I was thinking about, where does that sit with my atheism? What about ghosts because I definitely do believe in ghosts? Where does that sit with that as well? I was thinking it must all be about energy. It must be the whole synchronicity thing. It must be the universe. It must be the atoms moving; the fact that you put out a certain kind of energy. You’re more attractive in energetic terms. I do believe in all of that.

While I was making my coffee, I was reconciling my love of magic and things mysterious with the physics of it all. I think that was also prompted by the fact that there was a marvellous, marvellous trailer on yesterday at the pictures for Stephen Hawking’s life film…

Judith:

I’m really looking forward to that film.

Nicola:

Oh, my God, it looks so good. I was nearly in tears just in the trailer. He had such an amazing life and I’m so looking forward to watching that film. The actor looks just incredibly good.

Judith:

Yes, he does. Eddie Redmaine. He’s fantastic.

Nicola:

Is that his name? Yeah, yeah, there you go! I’m with you on magic Judith. I like it a lot.

Judith:

Good, good, good. Just one fun note on that… I have a client who’s an astrologer and I’m never really sure about astrology. It’s one of those things that when I read it and it’s good, I quite like it. I read it and it’s bad, I completely ignore it. She’s been writing very powerfully on her blog this last week because there’s massive astrology. One of things that she says is that, I don’t know exactly the ins and outs of it, but something has been blocked from all of us for the last two years and lifted earlier in the week. I definitely felt it and started to get emails from stuck projects and all sorts of things immediately. I think that’s what lead directly to the silvery shoes actually. There we go.

Nicola:

There’re an awful lot of charlatans out there. Let’s absolutely say that for a start but perhaps there are people who, within each of these disciplines – if you can call then that – that can tap into the universal energy; that do have perhaps a more receptive brain. In the same way that Einstein’s brain was made up differently. They’re starting to find from autopsies, I watched an amazing program, they’re starting to find from autopsies that really, really, really, really brilliant people not only meditated regularly, so were in touch with the universe, if you like, which is what you do when you meditate. Then, also that their brains were actually physiologically different to ours. They rather naughtily kept people’s like Nietzsche’s and Einstein’s brains, the people in the pathology labs rather naughtily kept slices and they’re starting to analyse them now and find out they actually were differently made up to ours. Perhaps there are people in each of these disciplines that are actually just more easily able to tap into…

Judith:

I believe that we all have that power actually.

Nicola:

Oh? But we just need to practice it more?

Judith:

No we’ve shut it down because it freaks us a bit. We’ve shut it down over the generations with ours, so three or four generations and we can open it up again if we want to and meditation would be a good place to start. Anyway!
