Here’s an urgent business tip for you! It’s especially for you if you, like me, work at a desktop computer in an office somewhere.
Or even a laptop in a cafe somewhere.
Because I’ve had a revelation which has been a long time coming but has fully arrived like a thunderclap in my brain just this last week.
This revelation was born of several events last week which were, in no particular order:
1. Attending the #AskGaryVee book launch in London with my daughter Phoebe (top right)
2. Looking for my iPhone 6+ phone WHILE working at my laptop
3. My 18 year old son’s vehement request not to EVER email him anything because he just won’t see it and my 20 year old daughter trying to delete her old Twitter account then deciding she didn’t even need her NEW Twitter account because nobody she knows uses it!
4. Best performing ads on Facebook Ads are suddenly mobile ads not desktop.
5. Finding out that even my own brand new website just didn’t work as I thought it would, on mobile!
So…. What is this revelation?
It’s a three-parter…
1. That the world has gone mad for mobile.
2. That our customers have gone mad for mobile.
3. That our future customers are ONLY on mobile!
Now, you might be thinking, all the marketers have been banging on about Mobile Marketing for years now. Yawn, yawn, can mobile marketing really be any different to desktop or laptop marketing?
And you’ve largely ignored them, just like I have.
This doesn’t really affect us, surely?
I truly didn’t get it until last week as I, like you probably, do most of my work on a desktop or a laptop.
But I really got slapped about the face by Mobile Marketing this last week. Let me give you some background then I’m going to tell you how you can get your business on Mobile quick AND in front of your customers (and your future customers) on Mobile!
Slap #1 – The #AskGaryVee Book Launch My daughter Phoebe and I went to London on the spur of the moment on Tuesday to attend a Secret Meetup in Soho, London, that Gary Vaynerchuk announced on Snapchat. Gary Vee is an investor in Snapchat, he’s big on interpersonal communication with his fans and Snapchat is brilliant for that. My two kids are ONLY on Snapchat and Instagram. Snapchat is ONLY on mobile.
If my daughter and I had not been snapchatting our way to the gym in the car (think James Cordon’s Carpool Karaoke without the great singers) then we would have 100% missed out on this Secret Meetup. It was great fun and as well as meeting Gary Vee, I met several people I know while Phoebe met several new friends, everyone all fired up about Gary Vee, social media marketing on Instagram and Snapchat, among other platforms and how they are now at the forefront of this new marketing revolution. (Phoebe is learning Instagram Marketing right now and growing her account and a couple of mine for me).
Then, on the Wednesday, from our VIP tickets in the front row of the 500 strong sell out crowd, I watched Gary Vaynerchuk pick up a laptop and wave it about saying that it’s pretty much obsolete. He doesn’t even take one with him when he’s travelling now, he just uses his (big) smartphone. I seriously thought he was going to throw in on the floor to make his point, and I could see from the fear in his eyes that the DJ (whose laptop it was!) thought exactly the same.
Slap # 2 – Looking for my iphone 6+ phone WHILE working at my laptop Because I needed to do a couple of things that were just not possible without using the relevant app on my phone, rather than being able to visit a website and achieve my goals there. Some of these apps don’t even HAVE a website you can use online. (A good example of a company that is straddling the gap well is Pixlr.com).
For the last few years, I’ve never needed my phone in the house, in fact, it’s regularly run out of battery because I rarely use it. Now, it’s the first thing I reach for when I wake up and drink my coffee.
Slap # 3 – None of the “Millennial generation” – our kids and their friends, use email … except to open accounts with apps and e-commerce companies. And they have deserted Facebook & Twitter completely!
My 18 year old son recently made a vehement request not to EVER email him anything because he just won’t see it (message or snapchat him instead) and my 20 year old daughter trying to delete her old Twitter account then deciding she didn’t even need her NEW Twitter account because nobody she knew uses it!
We discussed the “death of email” on the podcast recently and I seriously doubted it would ever happen but looking at my two, I think the end of email has already arrived and we just don’t know it yet. I’m off to get myself an app made!
Slap # 4 – Facebook Newsfeed Mobile Ads Start Outperforming Desktop Only Yep, just in the last month, in all my client accounts I’ve noticed that not only are Newsfeed Mobile ads cheaper but they are now performing better than Newsfeed only in terms of conversions!
Slap #5 – My “Mobile Friendly” premium theme website turns out not to be so much so! Go and check your business website on your mobile and make sure that your site visitors can take your business’ “most wanted action”. After absorbing all the above over the last week, I thought I’ll just check my site works properly on my phone or iPad”.
Well, it didn’t! I realised to my horror this last weekend that, after a couple of minor changes to a couple of my sites, some people simply couldn’t do what I wanted them to.
So get your phone now and go and see how your website is performing. Can you optin, book an appointment or even buy something?
Then go try it on your iPad.
Did you know that over 90% of Facebook’s monthly active users are on a phone or tablet device. Desktops and laptops are becoming less and less important in the marketing mix. Some might say, almost obsolete.
