I was talking to a client about their fear around doing something in their business the other day, and whenever I think of fear (or feel fear myself), I’m reminded of the phrase “Fear Is The Mindkiller…” from one of my favourite sci-fi novels of all time “Dune” (see below for the full litany).
Because it’s true that Fear IS a total mindkiller in business.
If you feel fear and allow fear to take up residence in your mind, it will stop you thinking straight, it will stop you making good decisions, and it will stop you taking action. You will feel, quite literally, like the rabbit caught in the headlights.
When analysing the obstacles that are stopping you achieving your goals, the fear of something is an equally valid obstacle as well as something practical like a lack of a skill for example. I have a great little exercise involving various coloured post-it notes that I show clients how to use to overcome any obstacle/ fear standing between them and their goals.
For example, one client wants to create a new community of business owners from her own background. I told her to start a Facebook page and start posting items of interest to her target market, sharing those posts onto her own profile. This will bring traffic to the page and building page likes tells you a lot about your prospects for the future. However, in one week she’d only managed to share two items and when asked why no more, she told me of her fear of being exposed. She’s afraid of what her family and friends will say about her new business venture and afraid of being exposed for some sort of fraud. Her fear has cost her a whole week in moving forward in her business.
While I’m generally quite a brave person, I do have fears, and in particular I realised recently I have a fear of disappointment. I realised this at Andy Shaw’s “Life Design Getaway”, and that this has stopped me doing all sorts of things over the last few years, including organising my own live events. I walked out of that room and immediately organised my first live event for several years!
Why not tell me in the comments what fears are holding YOU back and let’s see if we can permit your fear to pass over you and through you – “leaving only you”, and your certain success – in it’s wake.
In the book “Dune”, this litany against fear is an incantation used by the powerful female only political/ religious force called Bene Gesserit. They use it throughout the series to focus their minds and calm themselves in times of peril. The litany is as follows:
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
